Most people think of the NDIS as funding things like personal care, physiotherapy, or mobility aids. And while those are essential supports, they’re only part of what the Scheme can cover.
Depending on your goals, needs, and circumstances, the NDIS may fund other types of support — including those that help with independence, wellbeing, or daily life in practical ways.
Please note: This article is general in nature and not financial advice. The NDIS funds supports on a case-by-case basis. What’s included in your plan depends on whether it’s considered reasonable and necessary in your individual situation. If you’re unsure, speak with your support coordinator or planner.
Here are seven examples of supports the NDIS may include in your plan.
Getting out into the community is about more than appointments. The NDIS can include support to help you take part in social or cultural activities — like concerts, markets, gallery visits, or the movies.
This kind of support falls under community participation (social and recreational support). It’s about helping you build confidence, connect with others, and take part in things that matter to you — with someone there to assist if needed.
Pets can have a huge impact on emotional wellbeing — but they also come with daily responsibilities. If your disability makes it difficult to feed, walk, or care for your pet, some support may be included in your plan.
While the NDIS doesn’t fund pet ownership generally, it may fund supports related to assistance animals, or help with daily pet-related tasks if those are affecting your ability to live independently. You can learn more about how the NDIS views assistance animals and their role in support plans.
Maintaining your garden isn’t just about aesthetics — it can affect your safety, mobility, and wellbeing.
The NDIS may include support for tasks like mowing, clearing walkways, or removing trip hazards, particularly if these jobs are difficult for you to manage and impact your ability to live safely at home.
At YTSS, we offer practical help with house maintenance so your space feels manageable, comfortable, and truly your own — inside and out.
Hobbies can support mental health, build confidence, and provide structure to your week. In some cases, the NDIS may fund social and recreational support to help you get involved — whether that’s through attending a class, using materials, or getting transport to and from activities.
We’ve supported participants to try all kinds of things — from painting and gardening to music and crafts — with a focus on building independence and social connection.
Driving can be a game-changer for independence. The NDIS may include funding for specialised driver training if you need to learn in a modified vehicle, or require an instructor with disability-specific experience.
This support is usually linked to a goal — such as accessing work, study, or community life — and needs to be recommended by an allied health professional.
Feeling confident with technology makes a big difference to daily life. Whether it’s learning to use a smartphone, join a video call, or manage your calendar, support to build digital skills may be included in your plan.
Some participants are also funded for assistive technology — tools that help with communication, memory, or daily routines.
At YTSS, we’ve helped people set up devices, install useful apps, and get the most out of everyday tech — without the stress.
For people who experience sensory challenges, the right tools can make everyday life more manageable.
The NDIS may fund sensory equipment like noise-cancelling headphones, weighted blankets, or fidget tools — particularly when they’re recommended by an occupational therapist as part of a strategy to support regulation and reduce anxiety.
We also work with allied health professionals to make sure any sensory supports are tailored to your goals and needs.
What’s considered ‘reasonable and necessary’ will always depend on your goals, your daily life, and your support needs. But if something helps you live more independently, connect with others, or manage daily challenges, it’s worth asking about.
At Yours Truly Support Services, we help you get clear on what’s possible — and make sure your supports actually fit your life. Whether you’re new to the NDIS or planning for your next review, we’re here to help you navigate it with confidence.
