WHY ADAPTIVE BOXING IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL NDIS SUPPORTS YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF

When people think about NDIS-funded activities, they tend to picture familiar things. A support worker helping out at home. Community access to a library or shopping centre. Respite care to give a family member a break.

Boxing rarely comes up.

What is adaptive boxing, and who is it for?

Adaptive boxing is exactly what it sounds like a boxing program designed and delivered to be accessible to people living with special needs. It's not sparring. It's not a competition. It's structured training that draws on the fundamentals of the sport movement, focus, breath, rhythm adapted to meet each person where they are.

At Yours Truly Support Services, our adaptive boxing program is run by Joel 'Cama KO' Camilleri. Joel is a former Australian super welterweight boxing champion who has spent his career understanding the sport from the inside. This experience means the program meets people at every point. Someone who has never exercised formally in their life. Someone who finds large group environments overwhelming. Someone who has been told, in various ways, that sport isn't really for them.

It is for them. That's the point.

What boxing actually builds

The physical benefits are real improved strength, coordination, cardiovascular fitness, and energy. But participants and families often tell us that the bigger changes happen somewhere else.

Boxing builds confidence in a way that's hard to manufacture through other means. There's something about learning a new physical skill, mastering a combination, landing a clean jab on the bag, that tells a person something about themselves. That they can do hard things. That they can get better at something.

Routine matters too. Showing up to training regularly knowing who will be there, what to expect, what comes next provides a kind of structure that many participants find genuinely grounding. For people whose daily lives involve a lot of unpredictability, that stability has real value.

And then there's the social side. Joel runs a tight program. Participants get to know each other. There's banter. There's encouragement. There's the particular bond that forms between people who train together and push through something difficult side by side. For participants who have found it hard to connect in other social settings, this kind of environment focused, purposeful, and a bit gritty can open doors that softer settings don't.

How NDIS funding covers it

“If you're wondering whether this kind of support fits within an NDIS plan, the short answer is yes it can for many participants, it does.”

Adaptive boxing can be funded under Community Participation or Improved Daily Living, depending on the individual goals in your plan. If increased fitness, confidence, and social connection are among your goals, there's a strong case to be made. Speak to your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager to confirm whether an activity like this could be funded in your plan.

It's also worth noting that this isn't a separate service you have to seek out on your own. For participants already supported by Yours Truly Support Services, this program is something we can work into your support plan and coordinate alongside your other services so nothing falls through the cracks.

Why it matters that this is local

“There are NDIS providers all over Melbourne. Most of them can't offer this.”

Joel is part of the Yours Truly Support Services community of people who understand our participants across Sunshine, Footscray, Maribyrnong and the western suburbs, who are committed to delivering a quality program, and who show up week after week for the people in their corner.

That's not a small thing. Consistency in relationships is one of the most important factors in outcomes for people living with disability. A trainer who knows your name, remembers what you worked on last session, and notices when you're having a harder day that's the kind of support that actually shifts things.

If you'd like to find out more about our adaptive boxing program or any of our other supports we'd love to hear from you. We support participants right across Melbourne's western and northern suburbs, from Caroline Springs and St Albans to Craigieburn and Reservoir.
